Kick Sparring and Clinch Competition

The goal of this series is to provide experience in competition, in a fun friendly environment, and as a steppingstone to more advanced competition. Winners will be awarded medals for each bout! Spectators are free.

Kids Kick Sparring Rules:

Kids must show emotional and physical control during Kick sparring. The intensity should not exceed 60%, this is a semi contact tournament.  We are judging based on skill not aggression. All students will be matched up by age, and experience. Children without a match up may be asked to move to a different category, if no suitable match up is found a refund will be provided.  

Required Gear:

Head gear, shin guards, Mouthpiece, Muay Thai or MMA Fight shorts (shorts without pockets) or leggings. Chest Guard (mandatory if under 100lbs) Groin protector for males.

*We can provide chest guards, and shin guards from our loaners at the gym. If you need to purchase gear text coach Kurt (775) 400-1109

Approved Kicks:

Push Kicks, body kicks, leg kicks.

Sweeps are allowed but must be controlled, any sweep that looks forced (shows lack of technique) will not be scored. If sweeps are not controlled the referee will no longer allow sweeps for the remainder of the bout.

Illegal Kicks

Head kicks, spinning Kicks of any kind, Axe kicks, kicks to the front of the leg.

How the bouts will be scored:

Kicks by highest scoring to least: Push kicks, body kicks, low kicks

Effective defense: Hands high, Checking Kicks, Parrying push Kicks.

Controlled Sweeps: If a student completes 3 controlled sweeps, they will be declared the winner. If sweeps are not controlled the refree will no longer allow sweeps for the remainder of the bout.

Bout Length

Each bout will be 2 rounds of  1:30 seconds, in the event of a draw, a 1 minute overtime round will be used.

Clinching

Participants must show emotional and physical control during clinching.  We are judging based on skill not aggression. All students will be matched up by age, and experience. Participants without a match up may be asked to move to a different category, if no suitable matchup is found a refund will be provided.

Approved Techniques:

Knees-Straight knees should be thrown past the body (no contact should be made with the point of the knee)

Side Knees– Knees landed to the side of the body, using the inside of the thigh.

Sweeps- are allowed but must be controlled, any sweep that looks forced (shows lack of technique) will not be scored. If sweeps are not controlled the referee will no longer allow sweeps for the remainder of the bout.

Illegal techniques

Strikes that make contact of any kind, except for side knees. Double legs. Single legs. Trips(hooking the leg). Hip Throws.

How the bouts will be scored:

Ways to Win: A Bout may be won by maintaining the clinch for 8 seconds. If a competitor backs out of the clinch with her/his head down 2 times, the referee will award the bout to the clincher. If a student completes 3 controlled sweeps, they will be declared the winner. If sweeps are not controlled the referee will no longer allow sweeps for the remainder of the bout.

Knees– Knees past the body, and side knees will score in your favor.

Effective control – Correct hand position, whipping, will score in your favor.

Effective defense – Swimming in and pushing off the face will score in your favor.

Bout Length

Each bout will be 1 round of 5 minutes for adults, and 1 round  3 minutes for Kids. In the event of a draw, a 1-minute overtime round will be used.
